Another medication that is mainly used in the treatment of high blood pressure. They work by preventing tightening in the walls of smaller arteries and veins. This allows the vessels to stay open and relaxed allowing blood to flow through easily and so lower blood pressure.
They are either short acting or long acting and aren’t typically used as a first option for treating high blood pressure. They tend to be used in combination with other medications such as diuretics when first treatment options aren’t effective.
Side Effects:
Tend to be rare but can include low blood pressure, dizziness and light headedness when moving from a lying or sitting position to a standing one. It is suggested that before you begin taking alpha blockers you consult your doctor because they can alter the effects of other medications you may be taking including beta blockers and calcium channel blockers.
